Workplace wellbeing has always been so important to the Desk Life Project mission, and nothing makes us feel more excited than hearing from someone who turned burnout into brilliance! That’s exactly what Kam Parker did, taking time off from her busy corporate life to focus on her health. It’s amazing what a little attention to your body can do for your mindset and career, because she went on to start her own health and fitness coaching business, alongside Heavenly & Healthy Cakes, which we’re drooling over…
Here is her story:
Hi Kam! Tell us about your background before you began the business. What motivated you to change direction?
After 25 years as a successful accountant working in the corporate world, managing business projects and leading teams, I built a lucrative career for myself! With the success came a lot of stress which eventually started to take its toll on my health, both physically and emotionally, and I began to feel totally burned out. Last year I decided to take some time off to focus on my health and get back on track. Within months I saw a dramatic change; I was sleeping better, had more energy and I lost some excess weight which completely transformed my body! I lowered my blood pressure and glucose levels and felt much more balanced. I have always been passionate about health and fitness but it was the first time I really threw myself into it; researching online, reading books and listening to podcasts. Anything that was related to healthy eating, avoiding disease and fitness. I discovered a method that really worked for me which I knew I could follow long term, as it involved no fad diets, no calorie counting or restrictions, and no killing myself in the gym!
With my change in lifestyle and kicking unhealthy habits, I soon felt ready to return to work. However the idea of going back to accounting no longer appealed and I felt it was time for a change. The choice was staring me in the face, and after talking to family and friends I decided to take the plunge, jump ship to pursue my passion, and set up my own health and fitness coaching business by qualifying as a personal trainer. I haven’t looked back since!
I love what I do, helping others feel good about themselves. I teach a very holistic approach to health and weight management which includes functional fitness and advice on healthy eating plans. When I began to coach clients and analyse their nutrition I discovered that so many people were heavily addicted to sugar. I myself have been cutting back on sugar for almost 2 years after gaining more awareness around its health implications. I now mainly stick to natural sugars and even then, only in moderation, when I want the occasional sweet treat!
Amazing! And how did Heavenly & Healthy Cakes begin?
Whilst educating my clients on refined sugar I started creating healthy alternatives to shop-bought cakes which always seemed to be high in refined sugars, saturated fats and preservatives. I gave out some samples and received great feedback, and decided to supply them for clients and at local events. I recently set up my company Heavenly & Healthy Cakes, offering gluten-free, organic, vegan, low sugar products to promote healthy eating and show people that there are healthier alternatives. I am continuing to build my business helping others achieve their health and fitness goals, and my main focus is on nutrition, as healthy weight management is 80% diet and 20% exercise.
That’s an incredible story! What has been your proudest moment in business so far?
Watching others see results through my coaching and setting up my cake company. It’s almost like a dream come true even though it’s still early days, I am so excited about the future and proud of myself for taking a risk!
What’s the biggest lesson you have learned since starting your business?
To do my research, and network more. Have a clear USP and don’t rush into decisions. Building a business requires hard work and patience. I make a point of doing something every day to work towards my business goals and take a step forward each day. No going back!
How do you stay organised? Any tips or tools?
I wake up early, diary everything in, and plan ahead! I write things down, and make notes when an idea comes into my head.
Would you say you have a healthy work life balance now?
Currently I could do with a better work life balance. I do not switch off my business head as I am in the initial set-up stage, and I am constantly looking for inspiration and new ideas. But I do take time out for myself, to spend with my partner, family and friends.
What do you have planned for your business and what are the next steps toward your goal?
I am now studying Nutritional Therapy with the College of Naturopathic Medicine, taking my health studies to the next level. This is a 3 year course and a highly recognised professional qualification in the natural health field.
I am planning on setting up a professional website, building my brand and designing a logo. Plus doing a brand shoot and a professional healthy baking course. Learning and development is key for me!
