Seeing posts pop up from Cheeky Start-up Garage on Instagram is always a boost to my startup knowledge. With motivating quotes from the kind of successful people we all want to emulate, posts dispelling the myths that often discourage new entrepreneurs, and great tips for boosting your digital marketing skills, they are full of startup knowledge and ready to launch their consulting agency this year, with Gareth Simpson at the helm. Gareth told us all about his journey with the business so far in our latest Startup Story:
Hi Gareth! Tell us about your business.
I am co-owner of Cheeky Start-up Garage, a website providing digital marketing training modules for the side hustler and solopreneur. The business emerged from the experience of setting up and running businesses that myself and my business partner have. We realised there was little in the price range for side hustlers and solopreneurs if they wanted to educate themselves on digital marketing so Cheeky Start-up Garage was born. We have not launched yet but will be launching in August 2018.
Tell us about your background before you began the business. What motivated you to change direction?
My desire to set up my own business came late in life. I was working as a town planner in London and it wasn’t until I hit my 30th birthday that I realised the 9-5 was not what I wanted. I looked at working in an area I was passionate about… coffee. So I began setting up a coffee cart in London. This was put on hold when I married the love of my life and we relocated to Australia! I eventually set up my coffee cart which led to another coffee cart and a growing realisation that I loved business and loved helping people. Through setting up a biodegradable coffee pod business and yoga store I developed my knowledge of startups and wanted to take this knowledge and help other people.
What has been your proudest moment in business so far?
Without a shadow of a doubt it was selling my first coffee from my coffee cart and realising my wacky ideas could make me money… that was a light bulb moment!
What’s the biggest lesson you have learned since starting your business?
Sales, sales, sales. Businesses need sales. I spent a lot more time than I needed to perfecting my website design. I didn’t need to as I wasn’t getting sales when I needed to. So now I realise sales must be worked on up front!
How do you stay organised? Any tips or tools?
I’m old fashioned so Excel is a life saver! I also love Evernote as a great way to organise my information.
Would you say you have a healthy work life balance? If not, what would you change?
This is a great question. No I don’t and I hate it!! I have read so many books that push for that work life balance (Arianna Huffington) but it’s tough when you work a full time job and have two kids under 3! I only start working on my business at 7.30 so tend to work late. This will have to change!
What do you have planned for your business and what are the next steps toward your goal?
World domination, muh ha ha! No, we want to first launch Cheeky Start-up Garage, the next steps are all about making sure our training modules are absolutely killer and giving people the best content they can get. So preparing videos and keeping up with our posting strategies for Instagram and Facebook.
